Vange Flood Alleviation Scheme
Essex County Council are proposing a flood alleviation scheme, the main reason for the proposal is that they have identified properties within Vange as being at risk of flooding from overland surface water flows during intense rain.
The plan is to lower the ground slightly within an area of open space in the Vange Primary School playing field, thus creating a depression, to allow water to be temporarily stored within this area before discharging slowly to the neighbouring ditch and then to the local drainage system.
This work will be accompanied by improvements to the landscaping within and around the basin. The depression created will only fill with water during times of extreme rainfall and will remain dry for the majority of the time. The proposed site is currently a grassed, sloping field with some young trees (please see attached link for a map of the site). Under the scheme, ground levels within the basin will be lowered to form a depression surrounded by low embankments and a 1.8m high fence. Following completion, the area
will be re-landscaped with pathways, seating and planted to enhance its current ecological value. It will be able to be used as a, biodiverse, educational resource for the Vange Primary School.
